What is Sudare?

Sudare すだれ are blinds woven from bamboo and other natural materials. Osaka Kongo Sudare 大阪金剛簾 is a nationally designated traditional craft, made in Tondabayashi for generations. An ornate type called misu 御簾 has long been used in temples, shrines, and palaces, gently separating sacred space from the everyday world.

What is Jinaimachi?

Jinaimachi 寺内町 means “temple town” — a town built around a temple in the 16th century. Tondabayashi Jinaimachi is the only district in Osaka Prefecture designated by the national government as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

It is not an open-air museum: people still live in its houses, handed down from the Edo period to the present day.
